If a Pole calls you Nikodem Dyzma, it’s not a compliment. They are comparing you to the hero of a 1932 novel by Tadeusz Dołęga-Mostowicz, about a man who climbed the social ladder by using opportunism, luck and ruthlessness.
The novel Kariera Nikodema Dyzmy is about a down on his luck man from the east of Poland who goes to Warsaw looking for work. His chance discovery of a party invitation is the first step in a process that leads him to fortune and fame in politics and society – but he is careful to hide his past, as his new friends will not approve.
It has been made into movies and a TV show, and this month will be on stage at Olsztyn’s Teatr im. Stefana Jaracza. Catch the show from February 2-9.
